This is a thing of legend. I doubt you’ll get a chance to own another of these for some time. This was purchased from the heart of London, from the apparent third owner. These cabinets are super early (one of the first and only) MK1 4×12 Sound City cabinets. I can confidently and comfortably say this is likely to be an ex ‘The Who’ cabinet for various reasons, but even without that, it’s a true rarity. This would have accompanied a MK1 One Hundred Sound City amplifier at some point, and were made on request of The Who. It has super early features, including solid wood build. The front cloth is an early (1960s) replacement, as are the speakers (again, period correct 1960s).
Seeing any footage of The Who back then, their cabinets were always punctured by guitar headstocks, likely to have happened to this too. This would have then been passed, or sold, to the band mentioned on the stencil to the rear, and then sold to the previous owner of multiple decades who I purchased it from. It had been sat unused forever – a real excitement for me! It’s been well used and well gigged, as you can see, but still retains its originality, and sounds huge!
